Mechanism of action

A very effective, reversible direct inhibitor of both free and clot-bound factor Xa, apixaban is orally accessible. The last enzyme in the coagulation cascade, factor Xa, catalyses the conversion of prothrombin to thrombin, which results in the production of fibrin clots. While apixaban does not directly affect platelet aggregation, it indirectly reduces thrombin-induced clot formation by blocking factor Xa.
