Mechanism of action

A selective histamine H1 receptor antagonist, bilastine has a Ki of 64 nM. Histamine and other substances are released during an allergic reaction when mast cells degranulate. By binding to and blocking activation of the H1 receptor, bilastine decreases the development of allergy symptoms owing to the release of histamine from mast cells.
