Mechanism of action

Memantine is a clinically effective medication for a variety of neurological conditions, including Alzheimer’s disease. Memantine’s main mode of action is thought to include blocking current flow via channels of N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptors, a glutamate receptor subfamily with widespread involvement in brain function. Curiously, certain NMDA receptor channel blockers, like ketamine, have severe negative consequences. Memantine’s extraordinary therapeutic efficacy is most likely a combination of its unique properties and inhibitory mechanisms that it shares with ketamine.
