Mechanism of action

Roxadustat (FG-4592) is a prolyl hydroxylase inhibitor of hypoxia-inducible factor (PHI). Prolyl hydroxylase domain protein (PHD) activity is inhibited as the principal mode of action when normoxia is present. Three subtypes of hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF-) exist: 1, 2, and 3. HIF- has just one subtype.
