Mechanism of action

Adenosine diphosphate (ADP) receptors of subtype P2Y12 are blocked by ticagrelor, much like they are by the thienopyridines prasugrel, clopidogrel, and ticlopidine. Being an allosteric antagonist, ticagrelor differs from the other antiplatelet medications in that it binds to ADP at a different location, and the blockage is reversible.
